If you are void in the led suit, you may either discard an off-suit card or play a spade to trump the trick. Spades cannot be led until the suit has been broken by a trump play or when a player holds only spades.

The highest card of the led suit takes the trick unless one or more spades are played, in which case the highest spade wins. The player who takes the trick leads the next round.
